Many of us can recall a moment in which we shared something significant with a friend, colleague, or family member, hoping deep down they would offer care or comfort but instead we received shallow engagement or perhaps even dismissal.

Think of a time when this happened to you:

1. Who were you talking to and what did you initially share?

2. How did the person respond? How did you react to their unhelpful engagement?

Now what about the surprising moments when someone engaged you with more depth than anticipated? Can you recall a time when you were having a conversation with someone about your life and they engaged you and your story in a deeper way than anticipated, inviting to you to further exploration?

Spend a few moments reflecting on a particular experience:

1. Who were you talking to and what did you initially share?

2. What question(s) did they ask or what comment(s) did they make that drew you in and invited you to share more?

3. How did it feel to be seen and engaged with more depth?
